SVO or PPO rape oil as a diesel replacement

Rape seed is an annual renewable crop which when pressed has two products - oil for culinary uses or SVO fuel oil and the husks are used for logs or animal feed. No waste and annually renewable.

Our rapeseed oil has a carbon footprint of 0.85 kg CO2 eq/litre - this figure includes the energy required to grow the crop (tractor fuel, fertiliser, etc), transport the crop to site, crush the seed and filter the oil, and to transport the oil to customers in a 50 mile radius.

The comparative fuel is mineral diesel (Derv). Diesel in the UK has a carbon footprint of approximately 3.2 kg CO2 eq/litre. This takes into account the embodied carbon within the fuel (i.e. the carbon that existed in the original oil from which the diesel was refined), the extraction of the oil, the refining of the oil and the typical transport of fuel to the end customer.

Application

Because of economies of scale and tax policies the economics of using SVO as a commercial automotive product make its use unsupportable. However, when used as a static engine fuel used to generate electrical power fed back into the grid with the exhaust used to provide heating then the economies are totally supportive.
